Public architecture — six scenarios

Intelligent buildings adjust indoor conditions according to occupant activity, working patterns and daylight, cutting energy use while reducing the workload of facility teams. Multiple alarm mechanisms work together, managed centrally over the network, so any emergency is handled fast and decisively.

Office buildings

Smart panels in each zone run lighting, curtains, HVAC, fresh air and scene switching on preset schedules, meeting the illuminance each shift needs — working hours, after-hours, late-night patrols — while timers hold energy use to a minimum outside normal hours. In day-to-day operation the system alternates lighting circuits by time band, extending lamp life and cutting maintenance cost. Panels in meeting rooms control lighting, air conditioning, motorised curtains and projection screens, switching between prepare, meeting, projection and end scenes at a touch.

Motion sensing turns lights on when someone arrives and off after a delay when the floor empties. During holidays the system moves floors onto motion-sensing mode automatically while keeping basic security lighting on.

Schools

A central controller manages every classroom and library on one schedule, switching lighting, fans and air conditioning by timetable, and does the same for student dormitories; term time, holidays, weekends and special dates each get their own operating mode. While daylight is sufficient the local panels are disabled automatically and re-enabled at dusk. In large classrooms a panel controls lighting, curtains, air conditioning and projection, switching freely between lesson, presentation, exam and self-study scenes.

Small classrooms and reading rooms run on occupancy sensing: lights and cooling on when someone is present and daylight is low, cooling only when daylight is sufficient, everything off when the room is empty.

Sports venues

A graphical, zone-by-zone interface displays and centralises control of lighting, motorised shading and exhaust equipment across the venue, with one-touch scene switching from a touchscreen or panel. The system counts switching operations per circuit and tracks cumulative hours, current and voltage, warning maintenance staff ahead of time so replacements can be stocked before the old lamps fail. Current monitoring detects circuit faults, load current and tripped breakers and raises alarms automatically, keeping venue control running reliably and efficiently.

Circuits feeding high-intensity discharge lamps restart on a delay after switch-off, protecting expensive fittings. Interlocked with the fire alarm, a fire signal forces normal lighting in public areas off and brings emergency lighting under control.

Airports

The system controls switching and dimming, shading, motorised roof lights, air conditioning, power sockets, signage and indicator lighting across arrivals, departures and waiting areas, setting different lighting scenes and zoning air conditioning by time of day. Daylight sensing ties lighting, curtains and air conditioning into one energy-saving strategy. A rooftop weather station tracks outdoor conditions to automate and protect the curtain-wall equipment, and signals analysed by the building management system are collected over OPC and linked to the flight information display system.

Interlocked with the fire alarm: on a fire signal, public-area lighting is forced off or on as the situation requires and emergency lighting control starts. Critical lighting circuits are monitored, with any fault shown immediately on the central controller for attention; the distribution system is protected against lightning and surge arresters are fitted on the bus to protect the intelligent devices.

Stations and metro

The system controls normal and emergency lighting, advertising light boxes, fan coil units and the sockets serving ticket machines and vending machines across concourses, waiting rooms and platforms, with lighting scenes and fan coil operation set by time band and zone. In a waiting room, for example, illuminance rises to 100% as a train approaches, drops to 50% once it leaves and to 20% when service stops, with basic security lighting overnight. A graphical central interface controls every lighting circuit in the train preparation depot in real time.

Depot lighting is divided into circuits by track position, so maintenance can be targeted at one train at a time. Local control panels in each station building handle day-to-day operation, and the stations’ existing local area network brings every area under centralised management.

Exhibition centres

Lighting levels are tailored to each exhibition theme, and within a single show each hall and stand can set its own effects to suit its exhibits. Daylight and weather data drive lighting, curtains and roller blinds automatically, and the sockets feeding each stand follow the exhibitor’s own requirements. Managers set lighting scenes and air-conditioning strategies per hall against the event timetable: at 08:00, for instance, build-up mode brings on a third of the lighting together with air conditioning and exhaust fans, and at 09:00, as visitors arrive, the system moves lighting, cooling and exhaust into exhibition mode.

Replacing lamps in the large volumes of an exhibition hall is difficult and costly. Current monitoring with hour and switching counters anticipates lamp failures, so replacements can be stocked centrally and maintenance scheduled — faults fixed promptly, and a great deal of manual maintenance cost avoided.

Air-conditioning mode, fan speed and temperature, and underfloor heating temperature and switching, are all controlled from a panel or mobile terminal, while an air-quality sensor brings the fresh-air system on automatically.

Every circuit can be preset to a given state or brightness, so staff change the scene with a single button — for breakfast, lunch, dinner, banqueting, conferences, product launches or press briefings. Multimedia scenes work together: one touch on projection mode dims the lighting, drops the screen and curtains and switches on the projector, amplifier and player, all in an instant.

Guest rooms

Once a guest checks in, the system sets that room’s air conditioning to a comfortable level, and hotel staff can monitor occupancy status and service requests for every room through the guest-room management system. Control of the terminal devices in each room — lighting, curtains, air conditioning, television — keeps light, shade and temperature where they should be, gives guests the feel of home, raises the hotel’s standard of service and makes the building easier to run and cheaper to operate.

Public corridors & lift lobbies

Corridor and lift-lobby lighting combines timers with occupancy sensing: most lights run on schedule through the busy hours, then at night most switch off and sensing takes over, bringing lights on only where someone is present — a real saving. On holidays or for major events, a control computer or panel brings every corridor and lift-lobby light on at once.

Interlocked with the fire alarm: on a fire signal, normal lighting circuits in public areas are cut automatically and emergency lighting comes on.

Intelligent dimming and logic driven by ambient conditions keep the lobby in a soft, elegant light that leaves a good impression on arriving guests. The lobby is managed actively: all lights on when guests are coming and going, and at night illuminance is stepped down through the evening according to footfall, saving energy.

Underground car park

The underground car park runs on daylight sensing combined with timers. Distribution panels carry manual emergency switches that can cut or restore power to equipment at once, and car-park staff can also control the lighting from local panels when needed. The control computer shows whether any lighting circuit in the car park has failed, so staff can repair or replace it promptly.
